It took 2 years to put together a giant resources of Letter of the Week activities with my oldest two boys. Now that our oldest son (age 6) is a fluent reader and our Iv is reading simple sight word books, it'due south time to do a focused alphabet exploration with our youngest boy, age 3. Each calendar week I prove you what Letter of the Week looks like for our just-turned-Iii.
Letter D Activities
I similar to commencement with my drove of free alphabetic character books. He likes listening to these simple alphabet books and pointing out "big D" and "little d."
Another favorite is our gratis lilliputian letter book collection. Each book has 6 rhymes or songs just correct for toddlers and preschoolers.
We love using the wonderful Learning the Alphabet curriculum. For this activity I cut out the pictures, and he put gum on the back and named each one every bit he glued it onto the D. As he worked we emphasized the kickoff sounds. "/d/, /d/, duck!" or "/d/, /d/, dinosaur!"
He worked on our complimentary letter D dot sticker page, only wasn't interested in doing information technology all by himself. We took turns putting downward dots. Since he'southward getting kind of tired of these, we might try roofing the circles with something different next week.
He used a Practise-a-dot marking to encompass d's on this printable, which is included in Learning the Alphabet.
We kept it simple for crafts this week. He painted with Duplos and made a dinosaur craft using one-half a paper plate. I didn't get a picture of the dinosaur (information technology's and then easy to miss the sunlight on these dreary winter days!), but y'all can see both ideas in our collection of eight letter D crafts.
It was fun week for math, because we pulled out some dice activities. He rolled a die and made that many dots on a paper plate.
He rolled a die and made a belfry with that many blocks.
He was able to do this free monster die match game (almost) all by himself.
He's yet non ready to write letters, only I drew a alphabetic character D in pencil and helped him comprehend it with dice. This way he'south nevertheless building the letter of the alphabet and working on his fine motor skills – without attempting something that I know would frustrate him.
For sensory play I looked at Pinterest for a dough recipe. He caught a glimpse of this magical melting dough from Growing a Jeweled Rose and wanted to try it. Since it had simply a few ingredients, we gave it a shot. It kept him busy while I cleaned the kitchen!
Nosotros're reading books all week long! The widget shows some of our favorites for alphabetic character D. See all xix letter D books in this postal service.
This is one of our favorite activities from Learning the Alphabet. Coil a big soft block and meet which letter (upper or lowercase) comes up. And then build the ladders to see which letter of the alphabet reaches the top first!
We similar to do name activities every bit ofttimes as possible. This week I typed his name using a big font and cut information technology into pieces. Information technology was part of a drove of proper noun activities I found at Play to Learn Preschool. This was tougher for him than I'd anticipated. I guess nosotros need to do more than puzzles!
Each week we're certain to do at to the lowest degree i activity that involves the whole alphabet. This week we read Alphabeep a number of times. On each folio he named the letters. It'due south hard to believe that a month ago, when we started Letter of the Calendar week, he knew simply a handful of letters. Now, in just our 4th week, he recognizes almost all of them!
But every bit y'all tin can encounter, Letter of the Week is just a framework for lots of early learning activities. Nosotros'll be continuing on even though he recognizes well-nigh of the alphabet.
